  1. Notes and troubleshooting guide for users of RISC OS 3 machines
  2. ===============================================================

  4. Depending on the version of RISC OS you use, you may need to install
  5. the software items in this directory onto your hard disc before the
  6. RISC User in a Nutshell CD can be used correctly.
  7.  
  8. Note: all users (even those with RISC OS 4) may like to consider
  9. investing in a copy of CDROMFS from Warm Silence Software (details
  10. below). This is a replacement for CDFS and provides enhancements for
  11. all machines. For RISC OS 3 machines, it also cures some serious
  12. problems that are present in Acorn's CDFS.
  13.  
  14. RISC OS 4
  15. ---------
  16.  
  17. Ignore the items in this directory. CDFix is not needed, and Repeat is
  18. present in the RISC OS ROM.
  19.  
  20. RISC OS 3.5 to 3.7
  21. ------------------
  22.  
  23. Please install !CDFix in your boot sequence and restart your machine.
  24. It should be inserted into the following directory on your hard disc:
  25.  
  26. $.!Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk
  27.  
  28. You should find that Repeat is already present in your Library
  29. directory ($.!Boot.Library), but if it is not there, insert it.
  30.  
  31. RISC OS 3.1 and 3.11
  32. --------------------
  33.  
  34. As RISC OS 3.1 machines do not have a standardised boot structure, you
  35. will have to edit your boot file by hand. Copy CDFix to your hard disc
  36. and edit your !Boot file ensure that it is loaded at start-up. Then
  37. restart your computer.
  38.  
  39. You should also copy the Repeat file into your Library directory,
  40. which is set by default to a directory called 'Library' at the root
  41. level of your hard disc ($.Library).
  42.  
  43. RISC OS 2 and RISC OS 3.0
  44. -------------------------
  45.  
  46. These early versions of RISC OS are not supported by the CD's
  47. front-end (and it is probably impossible to use CD-ROM drives directly
  48. with such computers in any case). However, much of the older software
  49. on this CD is compatible with RISC OS 2, so it is quite possible to
  50. copy appropriate items from the CD-based archives and run them on such
  51. early machines.
  52.  
  53. Troubleshooting notes for RISC OS 3 users
  54. =========================================
  55.  
  56. 1. CDFix and Repeat are provided here both 'bare' on the CD and within
  57. a Zip archive. You are advised to install the versions from the Zip
  58. archive, as they retain the usual mixed-case RISC OS filenames. The
  59. copies supplied outside the Zip archive are present in case you have
  60. difficulties in opening the Zip archive before installing CDFix in the
  61. first place.
  62.  
  63. 2. If you have an older version of CDFix already installed on your
  64. system, you may find that the !Nutshell application still complains
  65. when you first run it, and asks you to install CDFix. Simply update
  66. your existing copy with the one on this CD, as the version here is the
  67. final release of this software. Remember to update the Mappings file
  68. inside CDFix with any additional mappings you have created yourself.
  69.  
  70. 3. Unfortunately there are many problems with RISC OS 3.1 and with
  71. versions of CDFS of RISC OS 3.1 machines which mean that RISC User in
  72. a Nutshell does not perform as well as might be hoped. The best
  73. solution is to buy a newer computer with RISC OS 3.5 or preferably
  74. RISC OS 4. However, here is a summary of the main problems and some
  75. tentative solutions:

  77. (a) Files on the CD with name suffixes (e.g. INDEX/HTM in the root
  78. directory) appear as Data files rather than with their correct
  79. filetypes.
  80.  
  81. The solution is to install CDFix in your boot sequence.
  82.  
  83. (b) Strange 'Line too long' and 'Program renumbered' errors occur when
  84. attempting to run the !Nutshell application, and it refuses to work.
  85. (There may also be 'Abort on data transfer' errors on the first
  86. attempt at running !Nutshell.)
  87.  
  88. This problem only affects certain machines with certain hardware
  89. combinations. You should contact the supplier of your CD software
  90. and/or related hardware to see if an updated version is available
  91. which cures the problem.
  92.  
  93. Note that this is *NOT* a problem with the Nutshell CD; it works
  94. perfectly on newer systems.
  95.  
  96. Perhaps the best alternative answer (which also removes the need to
  97. install CDFix) is to use CDROMFS from Warm Silence Software, but as
  98. this is a commercial product it will involve further expenditure.
  99. CDROMFS is a replacement for CDFS which cures all of CDFS's major
  100. problems and provides various useful enhancements. RISC User in a
  101. Nutshell has been tested successfully with CDROMFS on a RISC OS 3.1
  102. machine which had previously given insoluble problems when using CDFS.
  103.

  123. (c) The RISC User Disc menu system (present in the majority of
  124. magazine disc archives and used with some other software collections
  125. such as the Programmer's Toolkits) does not work correctly from CD.
  126. It loads up successfully and displays the help files, but will not run
  127. the individual programs, instead reporting 'not found' errors.
  128.  
  129. Unfortunately there is no direct solution; this appears to be a
  130. problem with RISC OS 3.1. Upgrading to a newer machine will cause the
  131. problem to go away. For older machines, to run the programs in disc
  132. archives you must simply double-click on the applications in the
  133. directory displays rather than trying to run them from the disc menu
  134. system. Alternatively, copy the archive's contents from the CD to your
  135. own disc and run the menu system from there.
  136.  
  137. (d) The Web browser keeps running out of memory.
  138.  
  139. In order to use the HTML front-end on this CD, a machine with at least
  140. 8Mb of RAM is recommended. However, the contents of the CD are
  141. organised in a logical way, and it should be easy to find what you're
  142. looking for simply by browsing the CD directly. Also, try viewing the
  143. individual HTML index pages accompanying the items on the CD, rather
  144. than starting at the overall graphical front-end.
  145.  
  146. Remember that the HTML is just a big menu system for the contents of
  147. the CD; you may wish to copy software items of interest to your hard
  148. disc and run them from there.
  149.  
  150. Alternatively, try using the file-only version of Fresco which is
  151. provided inside the !Nutshell application (Shift-double-click on
  152. !Nutshell to open it up and then run !Fresco inside it). Note,
  153. however, that this version of Fresco can only be used as a passive
  154. viewer; it does not support the necessary protocols that allow the
  155. Nutshell's special links to work, so you will not be able to run
  156. software etc. from the Web pages. However, it could be useful for
  157. reading manuals and viewing pictures. (The full, commercial version of
  158. Fresco does not suffer from this limitation.)
  159.  
  160. (e) The Web browser operates extremely slowly.
  161.  
  162. Try using the file-only version of Fresco, described in the answer to
  163. point (d), above, which works at a reasonable speed on older machines.
  164.  
  165. It should be noted that CD performance on RISC OS 3.1 machines is
  166. poor, and ARM3 machines are in themselves slow by modern standards.
  167. For reasonable viewing pleasure, a machine which is at equivalent to
  168. or better than a Risc PC or A7000+ with faster-than-dual-speed CD-ROM
  169. drive is recommended.

  171. Summary
  172. =======
  173.  
  174. If you are attempting to use this CD-ROM on a RISC OS 3.1 machine,
  175. then unfortunately you are at a significant disadvantage. We have done
  176. everything possible to make the CD function acceptably on all RISC OS
  177. configurations, but RISC OS 3.1 does not really come up to the
  178. minimum standard of performance that might be expected of it.
  179. Moreover, machines of this vintage are not really sufficiently well
  180. equipped to run a CD of this complexity.
  181.  
  182. RISC OS 3.1 user may therefore consider it best to ignore the
  183. HTML-based front-end and simply copy software out of the archives on
  184. the CD to the machine's local hard disc, and run it from there. (The
  185. individual HTML pages accompanying each item can also be viewed in
  186. isolation to act as a useful index.
  187.  
  188. Remember that the vast majority of software on this CD will work on
  189. all machines, including 4Mb RISC OS 3.1 computers; there is no need
  190. to use the HTML front-end if it proves too slow on your computer.
  191.  
  192. However, users of such old machines are strongly advised to upgrade
  193. to a modern machine, preferably a StrongARM Risc PC (or equivalent)
  194. with RISC OS 4 and a fast CD-ROM drive, and preferably a significant
  195. amount of RAM. Certain items on the CD (e.g. the Ovation Pro-based
  196. magazine layouts from RISC User 11:5 and later) require significant
  197. amounts of RAM to be present.
